STOIC 💪 // Lessons from my pops

Hello my InspoPeeps!

I hope you’ve had a wonderful week filled with gratitude and memories you can look back on that make you smile. 😁 I’ve had one of those weeks and been on a high since Monday!

I met with two amazing women about a potential marketing consulting project Monday morning and by the end of our call the wheels were in motion for me to start as soon as possible! 🥳 Throughout the rest of the week there were so many productive actions taken and accomplished, which felt fantastic! It was as if the momentum of the wheel kicked in and then it started flying! It’s in these highs that you can see things a little more clearly, feel lighter in your steps and know that life is really good. Really, really good.

One of the most important lessons my dad has taught me is this: “It’s just a temporary inconvenience.” What he means by this is that when the valleys come (because they will), it’s not forever. You will move through life and find that proverbial mountain top again. It’s in the moments when you’re looking out at from the vast view that you can truly appreciate the effort and struggle that got you there. It’s the idea that we never take this life for granted—That we find the blessing in the struggle as well as understand the work it takes to succeed (whatever that means to you). And for context, I’ve been searching for a new marketing project since July 1st as that’s my main source of how I earn a living.

With my dad’s lesson, I knew being out of work was temporary, and I kept my enthusiasm high because in my heart I knew the right thing would come along at exactly the right time. Guess what? It did! Perfectly, right on time.

From the book Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, one of the most iconic stoic philosophers in history, notes in his diary: “The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts.” So isn’t it true, then, that when we’re in the valleys of life we can control the circumstances simply by choosing the right thoughts in our minds. The thoughts that help you figure out the challenge at hand. The thoughts that show you how fortunate you are to learn the lesson of failing so that you can do better next time. The thoughts that ultimately help you move through the battle and come out the other side victorious.

My dad has so many wonderful philosophical points of view. Afterall, he was a Philosophy major and studied all the greats, Aristotle, Socrates, Epictetus, Seneca, Cato, Zeno and so many more. Growing up with that kind of wisdom shaped how I think and continue to show up in the world. Combined with my deep faith and inspiration from my mom, I feel truly blessed to have learned these teachings at such a young age. I feel like I’ve been an “InspoCoach” most of my life without even knowing it. 😁

Turning lessons from your parents into a living legacy is something special. What better gift than to keep sharing this wisdom throughout the ages. We all learn from the past. Sometimes the same mistakes repeat themselves, but often we find that we get better because we put these teachings into action. Action that propels you forward to your next great adventure.

I choose to live in a place where periods of my life that might seem annoying, ugly, challenging or inconvenient, are just that: inconvenient. But also, temporary. Why take up space in your brain to fuel the inconvenience? Rather, we can master our minds to take the next best step that moves us forward. Does a river stop flowing when rocks are in the way? Or a beaver makes a dam? Nope. It just keeps finding a way to keep on movin’. In reality, that’s the lesson: KEEP MOVING FORWARD. ⏩
